Uncertainty creates different effects in each of us- some avoid it with distraction, self-medication, avoidance. Other people are energized to find solutions, take action, generate a 'fix' of some kind. Some of us become helpless, others of us attempt to control every thing that isn't yet nailed down.
Uncertainty, and our differing ways of responding, often leads to conflict, tension, and stress between people. We find ourselves labelling and judging others, or criticizing ourselves for our own thoughts and behaviours.
Therapeutic conversations under these current circumstances of uncertainty can help.
Talking about worries and fears, airing concerns, no matter how irrational seeming- this is a first step.
But the helpful part is when we start to listen for and identify values and skills. We've never faced this particular problem before, but we've all faced and solved problems in our lives. We all have skills, strategies, tools, perspectives that have led us through dark times before.
As a therapist, my job is to listen, but more importantly to HEAR, hidden in the worry and distress, the strength and skill that you may have forgotten you have. By asking questions and hearing your stories, we can begin to recover your particular skills, together.
Conversations by Video conference (via Zoom) are not exactly the same as face to face. You may feel more comfortable in your own space, or you may feel awkward and worried about privacy. Some people I speak with do so from their car, to ensure their comfort. Wherever you decide to sit, once we are in conversation you will likely find the process goes just fine.
For some people, the barrier of the computer screen allows More comfort, as you can relax and not think about leaving the office and travelling home. It's faster, simpler, and just as helpful!
Contact me by phone if you'd like to set up a time for a video call. With flexible hours and a sliding fee scale, my hope is to offer help and support when you may need it most.
