Most people treat their body like a car: they fuel it, maintain it and use it to get around town.
But actually, your body is much more like a Horse- it's a big Animal, with a mind of it's own.
And when that Horse gets upset, nervous, fidgety, you need to know how to settle it, soothe it, or it will run away with you!
So what soothes the Horse? Exercise, fresh air, soft talk, soothing touch, company.
In this moment in our lives, responding to government calls for self-isolation and social distancing, we're all struggling with how to settle our nervous Horses- bodies that are jumpy, restless, alarmed and longing for touch and connection.
Movement of any kind- walking, dancing, stretching- will help. Movement releases tension, gives adrenalin an outlet, creates a physical sense of safety and action.
Stepping out into the fresh air, breathing, listening for birds and other natural sounds reassures our jumpy nervous system. Yes, there is a crisis happening... but right outside your door, Spring is gathering itself for a blossoming. Walk, if you can, no matter the weather. Breathe.
Soothe your senses! Though many of us are in a state of physical separation from others, we can still light scented candles, make herbal tea, cook a batch of fragrant soup or sauce.
Dress in something soft and sensual on the skin. Use lotion to give yourself a reason to offer your Horse a lovely, kind massage. Have a hot shower or bath.
Any actions that involve pleasant sensory stimulation will help to settle the nervous body, letting it know that you are safe, right here, right now. This crisis will unfold, and we all have a part to play. Staying calm and practicing self care will go a long way towards helping our whole community come out on the other side.
